Restorative Functions for Dental Auxiliaries Certification Program

Program Description

Larkin Community Hospital's CODA Approved Program offers South Florida's only Restorative Functions for Dental Auxiliaries (RFDA) certification program.


This course is offered in an intensive weekend format over four weekends, providing both the theoretical foundation and hands-on clinical training required for certification in restorative functions. Students progress from pre-clinical operative technique through patient simulation, with instruction delivered in lecture, laboratory, and clinical formats.


This course is approved for certification and training in Restorative Functions for dental auxiliaries, as outlined in Florida Board of Dentistry Rules 64B5-16.0051 and 64B5-16.0061.

Acceptance Criteria and Requirements Before The Course

Dental Assistants Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Be a graduate of a dental assisting program that is accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education, or have received formal training in expanded duties.
  • Never had a dental assisting license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the Candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either a dental office or as an educator of dental assisting.

Dental Hygienists Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Have an unrestricted dental hygiene license from any U.S. state or territory.
  • Never had a dental hygiene license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either a dental office, as an educator of a dental hygiene program, or be a graduate of a dental hygiene program, accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Student Requirements Once Accepted

Once accepted the following requirements must be met prior to the program start date:

  1. Current employment as a Florida licensed Dental Hygienist or Florida Certified Expanded Function Dental Assistant
  2. Submission of an Employer Verification Letter, signed by your supervising or employing dentist(s), confirming at least 2,400 hours of dental assisting experience within the 24 months prior to the program start date
  3. A Sponsoring Delegating Dentist
  4. Valid certificates in HIPAA, OSHA, and Bloodborne Pathogens (once accepted, a link will be provided to each student to obtain their certificate)
  5. Submission of a valid, unexpired Government-Issued Photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport
  6. Submission of a High School Diploma or GED Certificate 
  7. A current, unexpired Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certificate 
  8. Current Florida Expanded Functions Certification (EFDA)
  9. Proof of Professional Liability Insurance (Information regarding obtaining Professional Liability Insurance will be provided upon enrollment)


The Continuing Dental Education Department at Larkin Community Hospital, along with its Directors, reserves the right to grant, deny, withhold, or revoke certification at its sole discretion, including but not limited to matters of attendance, participation, performance, professionalism, failure to meet program requirements, or for any other reason it deems necessary.

Delegating Dentist Requirement

All students must have a delegating dentist to enroll in the program. The delegating dentist's responsibilities include:

  • Supervising and evaluating a portion of the student's clinical requirements
  • Submitting a report on the student's clinical performance to the Program Director
  • Communicating with course administrators as needed

The delegating dentist is also required to attend a two-hour online, interactive video conference training on the Laws and Rules of Remediable Restorative Functions, and calibration of the clinical requirements and procedures.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion, students will be certified in the following restorative functions:

  • Understand the classifications of cavity preparation design.
  • Apply principles of restoration in the primary and permanent dentition.
  • Fit, adjust, and cement stainless-steel crown (SSC) restorations on primary dentition.
  • Apply pulp protection principles for deep lesions (bases and liners).
  • Understand current adhesive materials and their clinical indications.
  • Place Class I, II, III, and V composite restorations using correct manipulation protocols and polymerization techniques.
  • Place Class I and II amalgam restorations using correct protocols. 
  • Place Modified Glass Ionomer restorations or composite restorations in Class V and protective applications.

    • Thursday: 5:00PM-7:00PM (Check-in and welcome social)
    • Friday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Saturday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Sunday: 8:00AM-5:00PM 
  • Weekend 2: 
    • Friday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Saturday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Sunday: 8:00AM-12:00PM  
  • Weekend 3: 
    • Saturday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Sunday: 8:00AM-12:00PM  
  • Weekend 4: 
    • Friday: 1:00PM-5:00PM
    • Saturday: 8:00AM-5:00PM
    • Sunday: 8:00AM-5:00PM   


Attendance: This is a one-month course and attendance at all four weekends is mandatory to obtain a certificate. 


Class Size: Each session is limited to 20 students. Early registration is recommended to secure a seat.


Sessions Include: Networking Lunch, Larkin RFDA sweatshirt, and all necessary supplies to complete the course. 


Dress code: Scrubs and closed toed-shoes.

  • Session 1 (October 2026): Total tuition is $10,000. A $2,000 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration to secure a spot.

 

  • Remaining Tuition Option: One full payment of $8,000 OR two payments of $4,000.


  • Full Payment ($8,000):  Due two weeks prior to program start date (September 17, 2026).


  • Two-Payment Plan: $4,000 due on September 3, 2026 and the remaining $4,000 due on September 17, 2026.
